Back on Etsy!

Now that my 2014 art shows are behind me I'm back to posting items for sale on Etsy. Just click on the Etsy jewelry grouping in the top of the right hand column and it will take you to my store. It is also available through my Facebook Page. I am slowly making changes to my Blog. In the meantime, any item not on Etsy may still be purchased by contacting me directly at scsuber@hotmail.com with any major credit cards or PayPal.

Tomorrow we are on our way to the Western Caribbean. Follow my captain and I on our travel Blog as we sail away once more. I am working on some Bridal designs and will post them after our return.

It's hard to believe that 2014 is just about over and 2015 is around the corner! Remember the Y2K fear as we reached the year 2000? There have been a lot of amazing changes in the world of technology while too many old world crafts are on the edge of extinction. I feel so blessed to be a part of the renaissance of fine embroidery and bead embroidery with such talented artists as Anneta Valious, Miriam Shimon, Dori Csengeri, and so many more from around the world.

Anneta Valious

It is a real honor for me to feature Anneta Valious, a well respected and talented Soutache Jewelry Designer. I began my embroidery journey from my grandmother's tutorship in Marseille, France at the age of five. My needlework has always brought me joy in its many forms, but I became totally enamored after first seeing Anneta's "Helen of Troy" (photo below) necklace masterpiece. Though I had worked with soutache years ago as a couturiere in the bridal industry, French Heirloom sewing and smocking for children, thanks to Anneta I became inspired to adapt my learned techniques into my jewelry designs.

Anneta Valious

Anneta Valious was born and raised in Moscow. After graduating from the Moscow State University, she married and moved to France, where she lives with her husband and family in the city of Nantes. Beadwork came into her life in 2007, quite by accident, but gradually creating jewelry, literally became a way of life for her.

Impressed by the creativity of Israeli jewelry designer Dori Csengeri she fell in love with soutache embroidery. At that time the soutache technique was little known as there wasn't any literature or tutorials. You basically had to learn it on your own. But this did not stop her, on the contrary, it gave her a certain excitement. Since then, Anneta is constantly developing her skills by regularly taking part in international exhibitions, competitions and teaching classes.

Helen of Troy

Her work is published in various magazines and in 2012 the Russian publishing house  AST-Press released her first book on soutache technique; and in 2014 her new book "Soutache" was published by Lark Crafts. Anneta likes experimenting with new techniques, and this process can be endless since the fantastic world of beads is boundless.

Many thanks to Annetra for allowing me to share her story.

Meet Jasmine

My hand-embroidered soutache creative process begins with choosing a focal, the heart of my design. Followed by determining the best color combinations of soutache braids and beads. etc, as it's compliment. Though I start with an idea of how I want it to come together each piece seems to takes off on its own as I continue to make fine stitches incorporating tiny beads into the swirls of colorful soutache braid.

June Birthstone

Pearl
June Birthstone

Pearls are one of the only gems that are created by a living creature. Pearls occur in nature when a foreign body, such as a grain of sand, finds its way into an oyster shell. The oyster reacts defensively by secreting nacre to smooth over the irritant. Layer by layer, year by year, this tiny grain of sand becomes a pearl.

Pearls were very popular with Kings of Europe and Maharajas of India. Queen Elizabeth I of England especially coveted pearls, and would buy chests of them at a time. By the begining of the 20th century this popularity had led pearl producing oysters to the brink of extinction. Around this time, a Japanese businessman named Kokichi Mikimoto prfected a technique for culturing pearls. Although cultured pearls were initially seen as inferior, the practice slowly took hold, and today virtually all pearls are cultivated on vast pearl farms in Japan and the South Pacific. Though Mikimoto is often given credit for the culturing process, there is evidence that it was attempted as early as 1500 BC.

The quality of a pearl is determined by its luster, complexion, color, overtones of color, size and shape. The more valuable pearls are usually a creamy off-white with a pink or rosy overtone, high luster and few blemishes. South Sea Pearls and Tahitian pearls are notably some of the finest and most expensive pearl varieties.
